What is a Theragun?
The Theragun is a revolutionary tool used to perform Percussion Therapy. Percussion Therapy is a form of massage utilising repetitive vibration and movements to treat soft tissue injuries and ailments.
What is percussion therapy?
Percussion therapy is a type of vibration massage with the inclusion of a hammering motion designed to penetrate soft tissue with rapid striking motions. Utilising a variety of detachable heads, the Theragun can be altered to target specific muscle groups and injuries.
Is the Theragun safe?
The Theragun is a great tool for alleviating sports related injuries, but they can be harmful if they are used incorrectly. A trained massage or physical therapist can identify problematic areas and walk you through the correct methods and attachments to use on the area. By beginning the massage methodically and slowly, your therapist can ensure you are comfortable whilst alleviating inflammation and other problematic areas.
- Percussion therapy is commonly used to treat:
- Sciatica
- Improve muscle flexibility
- Carpel tunnel syndrome
- Shin splints
- Soft tissue inflammation
The Theragun is a versatile tool thanks to the variety of head attachments, ranging from large and flat for large, inflamed muscles such as the calf and forearms, to pointed smaller attachments for applying pressure to specific muscle groups. This allows treatment of almost every area of the body.
What to expect?
First, your massage therapist will discuss any problematic areas and if a percussive massage is the correct treatment. You can then experience a small portion of the massage, ensuring you are comfortable with the massage and the tool.
During your massage it is normal to lose feeling in the target area or a feeling of numbness, this is caused by the repetitive vibrations and impacts that allow the relaxation of the muscles, reducing inflammation.
When should a Theragun be used?
There are two ways to use a Theragun, ailment treatment and recovery enhancement.
Although the evidence of percussive massages increasing recovery is largely anecdotal, many sports enthusiasts swear that the Theragun can be used proactively to speed up recovery as the deep penetrating vibrations can break up lactic acid pockets, preventing DOMS ( Delayed Onset Muscle Stiffness ).
